1Title:  Henry Harrison Cumings Papers

 Abstract:  Henry Harrison Cumings (1840-1913) was born in Illinois. With his family, he moved in 1825 to Unionville, Lake County, Ohio. In 1852, he moved to North Madison, Lake County, Ohio. Cumings attended various schools, including the Madison Seminary and the Grand River Institute at Austinburgh. He later enrolled at Oberlin College, graduating in 1862. He then enlisted in the 105th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War, receiving a commission as a 1st Lieutenant of Company D. In 1864, he was promoted to the rank of Captain of Company A, later transferring to Company K. During the war, Cumings and the 105th Regiment saw action in the battles of Perryville, Kentucky (1862); Milton, Tennessee (1863); Hoover's Gap, Tennessee (1863); Murfreesboro, Tennessee (1863); Lookout Mountain, Tennessee (1863); Missionary Ridge, Tennessee (1863); and Atlanta, Georgia (1864). After the war, Cumings settled at Tidioute, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where he lived for the remainder of his life. In 1867, he married Charlotte (Lottie) J. Sink. Cumings was active in various oil refining companies, and also served in local political and governmental posts. The collection consists of correspondence, supply orders, military records and publications, post-war business records, personal writings, newspaper clippings, speeches, and an autograph book. The collection pertains primarily to Henry Cumings' Civil War experiences, with detailed information referring to the 105th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and the post quartermaster department. Also included is material relating to Oberlin College during the early 1860s, letters from his wife, Lottie Sink Cumings, and personal information pertaining to Henry Cumings, his family and friends. In addition, the collection includes the papers of Henry's grandfather, Benjamin Cumings, and George Densten, a family friend, primarily correspondence.

 Abstract:  Marilla Wells Leggett (1823-1876) was the wife of Mortimer Dormer Leggett, of Montville and Zanesville, Ohio. He commanded the 78th Ohio Volunteer Militia during the American Civil War, served as United States Commissioner of Patents (1871-1874), and practiced law in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of eighteen diaries and miscellaneous papers. There are lengthy entries concerning trips to Mississippi (1862 and 1863-1864) and Morgan's Raiders in Ohio (1863).

 Abstract:  Fayette Brown (1823-1910) was a banker and industrialist who resided in Cleveland, Ohio with his wife, Cornelia, and children, Alexander, William, and Mary. The collection consists of personal correspondence of members of the Brown family, poetry, grade reports, a cash sheet detailing school expenses, a Union Army payroll sheet, and notices and memoranda from the Northern Ohio Sanitary Fair (1864).

 Abstract:  Joseph and Jacob Perkins were sons of Simon Perkins, general land agent in the Western Reserve. They came from Warren, Ohio, to Cleveland in the 1850s to engage in banking, railroad building, real estate and various businesses. Together they organized and operated the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad. Joseph was president of the Bank of Commerce (1852-1872), a leading benefactor of Cleveland charities, the first president of Cleveland City Hospital, and a trustee for Western Reserve College (1846-1885). Jacob, also a businessman and president of the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad, was a prominent Ohio politician as well, serving as a member of the Ohio Constitutional Convention in 1850. His son, Jacob Bishop Perkins, was a large real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Joseph Perkins' papers include business correspondence, building construction contracts, land, tenement, and office leases, financial statements and business records, maps and surveys, cancelled land contracts and cancelled checks. Jacob Perkins' papers include voluminous correspondence, and accounts and receipts of business affairs. Jacob Bishop Perkins' papers include correspondence, legal papers, contracts, deeds, leases, maps, and surveys, all pertaining primarily to his affairs as a real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Other family papers include school books, letter books, estate papers, genealogical information, a scrapbook on the early settlement of the Western Reserve, business papers of Joseph's son Douglas and a Civil War diary by another son Charles. Also included are photographs, diaries, trip journals, correspondence from Simon and Nancy Perkins, financial journals, ledgers and account books of Stephen E. Brooks, as well as material relating to the Cleveland, Warren & Pittsburgh Railroad, the Chicago, Danville & Vincennes Railroad, the Cleveland Female Seminary, the Cleveland Board of Park Commissioners, the Hill Clutch Company and the Walker Manufacturing Company.

 Abstract:  William Pendleton Palmer (1861-1927) was the President of American Steel and Wire Company, a director of U.S. Steel Corporation, and President of the Western Reserve Historical Society (Cleveland, Ohio) from 1913-1927. Palmer had an intense interest in the American Civil War and acquired an extensive collection of manuscript material related to the war, the memories of that conflict, and slavery. This collection is one of several Palmer collections from the Civil War era owned by the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of dozens of different types of documents in three distinct categories: civilian, governmental, and military. The document types created by civilians are: academic records, autographs, bills of lading, bills of sale, biographical sketches, circulars, diaries, dissertations, envelopes, essays, financials, funeral records, invitations, letters, manifests, memoirs, minutes, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, petitions, plantation records, obituaries, poetry, postcards, prayers, reminiscences, resumes, rosters, scrapbooks, sermons, ship's papers, slave rolls, song lyrics, speaker's notes, speech texts, unpublished books, and yearbooks. Governmental documents types are: affidavits, certificates, contracts, coroner's reports, court documents, depositions, diplomatic documents, financials, indentures, legislation, letters, licenses, notes, pardons, probate records, proclamations, resolutions, subpoenas, telegrams, and warrants.
